New Mobile Library and Cultural Center for Mexico City

This is the new A47.  Designed by the Mexican architecture studio PRODUCTORA and adapted from a standard Freightliner M2 20K Lorry, this vehicle is meant to be much more than a traditional book mobile.  It was commissioned for Fundacion Alumnos47, a civic organization for the arts, to be a travelling community and cultural center.  The A47 does make the rounds of Mexico City’s neighborhoods with scheduled stops for the purpose of allowing citizens to browse and check out books.  More than this, however, it has the capability to serve as both a stage, a classroom, and a forum for public discussions.  The illustrations below demonstrate how the A47 can be rapidly and flexibly stationed for these various purposes, using its floor jacks, snap-out stairs, and furniture locker.  The Fundacion Alumnos47 has as its major project at this time, the completion of a public art museum by the year 2014.  In the meantime, to house their growing collection and to hone their creativity and excitement, the organization has challenged itself and enriched the community with the A47.  Until the museum’s completion, the A47 will stand as its surrogate cultural center.  For now, side-by-side with its functions as a book mobile, the A47 is home to art classes, workshops, book and film clubs, and poetry readings.  Will it succeed in this digital era when the very notion of a book mobile at first sounds like a throw back?  We shall just have to watch and learn.
