Never miss another "to be read" book!

8 year old puts money where her mouth is on passion for reading

by Bryan Thomas Schmidt

Are you a book lover? Do you just say you love books or do you live it like this California eight-year-old? Jessica Palacios loves books so much she wants to share her love of reading with others. When her neighborhood bookstore, the oldest children’s bookstore in the nation, was about to go out of business, Palacios launched a fight to save it. She and her family now own it and have made it a place where she and others can show kids how important reading can be.

As she reads to kids at the store, Palacio’s passion shines through. Her warmth and excitement are catchy and kids respond in kind. Palacio hopes to help others develop the same love of reading she has, one that will last a lifetime.

With reading being fundamental in so many areas of life, vital to success in education, vocation, and so much more, Palacios’ mission is not just about books but about quality of life, and along the way, she’s helping encourage a love of stories.

A girl after any writer’s or book lover’s heart, wouldn’t you say?

It’s so important for children to have passionate readers to look up to. I know I caught the reading bug from my parents. They both love reading and encouraged me to read whatever I loved. Others in my family kinda snubbed the books I loved. I’m so thankful my parents didn’t.

Yeah, I think it’s great when kids take matters in hand and set this kind of example. Exciting hope for the future demonstrated.
